Duterte renews warning vs local officials misusing emergency subsidies

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday reiterated his warning to local officials against mishandling the cash relief granted by the national government to the poor.

In his nationally televised address, Duterte revealed that a total of 89 barangay captains were preventively suspended for six months by the Office of the Ombudsman for alleged involvement in irregularities in the distribution of the social amelioration program.

“I warned you, pag-umpisa pa lang sinabi ko, do not f*** with this, itong pera sa Pantawid. Iyong panahon ng COVID na namigay ang gobyerno ng pera para sa mga mahirap. Sinabi ko na, lalo na sa barangay level, huwag na huwag ninyong gawin,” according to him.

The Chief Executive also asked the Ombudsman to dismiss the village chiefs from service if proven guilty.

“Sabi ko na nga eh kaya ako nag-warning noon. Ito, preventively suspended kayo. Iyan, in the meantime na naghi-hearing ‘yung kaso, suspended kayo. But eventually, ito puro lahat malversation ito of public funds which is very serious.

“At the end of the investigation, if you are good, then you are exonerated. But if you are guilty, I am asking now the Ombudsman, I’m requesting, most respectfully requesting the Ombudsman to dismiss them from the service,” concluded Duterte.
