Nauna pa kay Velasco! Alan Cayetano’s BTS urge House to address hike in prices of basic goods

With House Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco busy with Charter change (Cha-Cha), Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano has taken the lead in pushing for a congressional investigation into the spike in prices of basic goods in recent weeks.

Cayetano, his wife, Taguig Rep. Lani Cayetano, and clique named BTS (Back To Service), filed a resolution urging the House of Representatives to lead efforts to control the soaring prices of basic goods such as meat and vegetables.

House Resolution 1515 seeks an investigation into the increase in prices of basic goods to determine what policies can be implemented by the government to feed the country’s growing population.

For January 2021, the prices of most meats and vegetables have spiked by up to 66 percent, the Department of Agriculture’s price watch has reported. The increasing prices of food products have already pushed the country’s inflation rate to 3.5 percent last December, according to the Philipine Statistics Authority.

“With a third of Filipino households reporting hunger and a quarter of businesses wiped out last year, the upward trend in the prices of our basic goods is another tragedy in the making,” Cayetano said.

Co-authoring the resolution with the Cayetanos were Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte, Jr., Batangas Rep. Raneo Abu, Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez, Bulacan Rep. Jose Antonio “Kuya” Sy-Alvarado, and ANAKALUSUGAN Party-list Rep. Michael Defensor.
