Palace appreciates filing of bill suspending PhilHealth, SSS contribution hikes

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang said it appreciates the filing of a measure granting President Rodrigo Duterte the power to suspend the scheduled increases in the contribution rates of PhilHealth and Social Security System (SSS) in times of national emergencies.

“We appreciate that po. Pero inanunsiyo na po iyan ng Presidente, kahit ano pong mangyari, sinabihan na niya si President Gierran: Huwag kayong magtaas ngayon,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised briefing Thursday.

“Pero I understand, as author of the Universal Health Care Law, baka kinakailangan iyang batas na iyan para maging legal basis. So maraming salamat po sa mga mambabatas,” Roque also said.

In a public address Monday, Duterte told PhilHealth CEO and President Dante Gierran to suspend the proposed monthly premium hike amid the coronavirus disease pandemic.

Under the Universal Health Care Act, monthly rates will rise to 3.5 percent in January 2021 from 3 percent last year.

The law also adjusts the income ceiling to P70,000 from P60,000, increasing monthly contributions to P2,450 from P1,800.
