A personal reason is behind Sen. Panfilo Lacson’s decision to help a “kariton” vendor who was manhandled during a clearing operation in Parañaque City.
In a post on his Twitter account Saturday, Lacson also brushed off insinuations by some Twitter users that questioned his motivations.
“Even for a while, can’t we think of the plight of the vendor first? Now, before anybody questions my motive for getting involved – it’s personal. My late mother was a poor vendor like Warren. She was luckier as she paid her dues in our small town’s public market,” he said.

Lacson’s father was a jeepney driver and his mother was a market vendor. He is the fourth of their eight children.
On Saturday, Lacson scored the maltreatment of a “kariton” vendor who was later identified as Roldan Warren Villanueva, who was handcuffed and manhandled by personnel of the city government’s task force.
He said he is “doing something about this” since the vendor’s “kariton” may be his family’s only lifeline.
“Justice and the rule of law must prevail but there is nothing wrong if mercy may overrule justice. That poor vendor’s ‘kariton’ may be his family’s only lifeline. I am doing something about this,” Lacson said.
