President Rodrigo Duterte has accused the European Union (EU) of holding hostage the coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine developed by British drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc and Oxford University.
In a pre-recorded speech Monday, Duterte read a news article saying that the European Commission, EU’s executive body, is blocking the export of AstraZeneca before the company fulfills its obligations in the regional trading bloc.
“‘Yung AstraZeneca hinostage ng European Union,” the Chief Executive said.
“Tingnan mong ka-g*go ng European Union ha… the European Commission launched a new mechanism on Friday to monitor and in some cases block — parahin — coronavirus vaccines exports out of the European Union,” he added.
Duterte lamented that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, where the Philippines is a part of, is “not really as powerful as the EU” in securing access to Covid-19 vaccines.
“Wala tayong connection, wala tayong pera. May pera tayo pero naka-ready lang, standby,” he said.
