Duterte OKs extension of ‘no-disconnection’ policy for poor power consumers

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte approved during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting the recommendation of the Department of Energy (DOE) to extend its no-disconnection policy for low-income consumers amid the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.

On Thursday, Nograles said Duterte “readily agreed” to continue the no-disconnection policy, given that electricity is a basic necessity Filipinos cannot live without.

Nograles also said Duterte urged Congress to extend the Lifeline Rate for marginalized power customers from 2021 to 2051.
