Myanmar coup a blow to democracy? Palace chooses to keep mum

By Prince Golez

Malacañang on Tuesday declined to comment when asked if it sees the military’s takeover in Myanmar as blow to democratic reforms in the country.

In his televised briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, however, said the government will prioritize the welfare and protection of Filipinos in Myanmar.

“Palagi pong prayoridad natin ay ang ating kababayan sa Myanmar at bahala na po ang DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) na sagutin yang mga ganyang questions,” he added.

On Monday, Roque said the government will assist those who want to be repatriated or provide them temporary shelter in the embassy.

The country’s defense units, he added, are ready to airlift or ship out Filipinos in Myanmar.

This was, however, refuted by Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr. who, in a Twitter post, said, “the last thing we will do is assemble our armed forces to evacuate our nationals.”
