President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the allocation of P362 million for genomic bio-surveillance efforts to strengthen the country’s coronavirus recovery, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.
Nograles said genomic biosurveillance would help the government improve efficiency of contact tracing of people infected with the new variant of the pandemic SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus first detected in the United Kingdom.
“With regard to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government continues to take steps to adapt and appropriately respond to this evolving outbreak. With different strains and variants of the Covid-19 virus now emerging, the Department of Health will be mobilizing resources and investing in genomic biosurveillance,” he also said.
According to him, the country’s genomic surveillance capacity would support the national deployment plan for mass immunization against Covid-19.
Understanding the virus infection and possible mutations will enable the government to implement a more responsive vaccination program, execute other existing health interventions, and prepare for future pandemics, said Nograles.
