Sen. Panfilo Lacson lauded Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana for opening lines of communication with the University of the Philippines by taking part in an opening dialogue with UP officials Thursday.
Lacson, who chairs the Senate’s defense panel, said the dialogue, held in Quezon City Thursday morning, showed that “reason prevails.”
“UP-DND Accord: Reason prevails. Sometimes it takes a small step backward to achieve a big leap forward. Much credit goes to SND Del Lorenzana,” he said in a post on his Twitter account.

In a separate statement, Lacson said Lorenzana “should be commended” for “taking a step backward in agreeing to open the lines for future discussions with University of the Philippines President Danny Concepcion in finding a common ground to resolve the issues involving the state’s security concerns and the UP alumni’s time-honored academic freedom.”
Some weeks back, Lorenzana terminated the accord between the UP and the DND, where security forces cannot enter the UP campus without prior coordination with UP officials.
Lorenzana at the time said this was based on information that UP was a hotbed for recruitment of the New People’s Army.
But Lorenzana issued an apology later on after it was learned that many of the personalities that the Armed Forces claimed were recruited by the NPA and were captured or killed are actually alive.
