President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday defended his decision to place Metro Manila and four other provinces under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), saying other countries have also imposed lockdowns due to a surge in coronavirus (Covid-19) cases.
In a televised address, Duterte said Ukraine, France, Germany, Poland, Italy have also imposed lockdown strategies to stem the rising tide of new infections.
“Ang gobyerno ba natin nagkulang? Ang gobyerno ba natin walang ginawa? Alam mo sa totoo lang ang naka-lockdown ngayon, naka-lockdown ang the countries of Ukraine, France, Germany, Poland, Italy,” according to the Chief Executive.
“Seventy-five percent of Italy has entered a new lockdown in a bid to fight the rising rates of coronavirus. Hindi lang tayo. Nauna na nga sila sa vaccine and yet itong may bagong strain ewan… I’m not a doctor or a medical practitioner pero may mga reinfection sila at may bagong strain at ito ‘yong (kinatatakutan) ko,” he added.
Duterte earlier placed the National Capital Region and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal under ECQ until April 4 amid the continued rise of active cases in the country.
The Philippines now has 731,894 confirmed Covid-19 cases, of which 13,186 are active and 603,213 have recovered.
