Duterte likely to visit China before term ends: Roque

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to visit China’s Xi Jinping to personally thank him for his donation of 600,000 doses of Sinovac’s Covid-19 vaccine, probably before his presidency ends in 2022, Malacañang said Wednesday.

At the arrival ceremony of the China-made vaccines in Pasay on Sunday, Duterte said he wants to visit China “maybe at the end of the year” to express the nation’s gratitude for donating a batch of the Sinovac vaccine CoronaVac.

“Iyan po ang gusto niyang mangyari. Anyway alam naman ng Presidente na patapos na rin ang kaniyang termino at napakabuti ng naging samahan nila ni President Xi. Siyempre, bago siya magpaalam sa government service eh nais din nga niyang makarating ng Tsina… para magpasalamat po kay President Xi,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview on radio RMN.

Asked when the President intends to visit the East Asian nation, Roque said: “Hindi po natin alam pero siguro po bago matapos ang termino sa 2022.”

The Philippines started its Covid-19 vaccine rollout on Monday, using the first doses from Sinovac, at the UP-PGH. Simultaneous rollouts also took place in select hospitals in Metro Manila namely, Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital, Lung Center of the Philippines, Veterans Memorial Medical Center, and at the Philippine National Police General Hospital.
