Impunity must stop: Makabayan seeks House probe on ‘red tagging’ of Mandaluyong judge

By Billy Begas

Members of the Makabayan bloc have jointly filed a resolution seeking congressional probe on the alleged red-tagging of Mandaluyong City Regional Trial Court Judge Monique Quisumbing-Ignacio.

The party-list representatives urged the House Committee on Justice to condemn and investigate, in aid of legislation the harassment and red-tagging of Quisumbing-Ignacio.

The resolution was filed after a tarpaulin was hanged in the footbridge of EDSA-Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City linking Quisumbing-Ignacio to the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

The tarpaulin appeared after the judge ordered the release of activists Lady Ann Salem and Rodrigo Esparago.

Commission on Human Rights spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia said that “Such incriminating claims in the tarpaulin exposes the judge to grave danger.

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) also condemned the same.

“The red-tagging of Judge Quisumbing-Ignacio comes at a time when threats against members of the legal profession are at an all-time high. For instance, a study made by the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) revealed that 61 lawyers, which includes judges and prosecutors, were killed under the Duterte administration,” the resolution read.

As members of Congress and as representatives of the people, Makabayan bloc said “we should not countenance these kinds of attacks against members of the legal profession, those tasked in the dispensation of justice in our country, and even those against ordinary individuals. This state of impunity must be stopped.”
