Allowing the private sector to import COVID-19 vaccines “at will” may well be President Rodrigo Duterte’s best birthday gift to himself, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Tuesday.
But Lacson said the next challenge is how soon the authorities can get the approval for the private sector as importing vaccines is under a tripartite agreement.
“The President’s best birthday gift to himself is allowing the private sector to import COVID-19 vaccines “at will”. The next challenge is how long they can get the approval under a tripartite agreement,” Lacson said on his Twitter account.

During his televised public address Monday night, Duterte said he is allowing the private sector to import vaccines at will – following a spike in the number of COVID cases.
Earlier, Lacson said the government should treat the private sector and local government units as partners and not competitors in the vaccination program, by allowing them to actively and even proactively procure and administer vaccines.
This is so long as they are in close coordination and under the supervision of the Department of Health and National Task Force Against COVID-19, he said.
Lacson cited his experience as the then Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery under the Aquino administration, where the private sector played a major role in alleviating the suffering of those affected by Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013.
