National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 Adviser Ted Herbosa has resigned as executive vice president of the University of the Philippines amid intense criticism of his tweet linking a man’s death to community pantries.
In a statement, UP said Herbosa’s resignation was accepted by university president Danilo Concepcion and is effective immediately.
The government adviser cited “personal reasons” for stepping down from his post.
Herbosa drew flak online over his tweet blaming the community pantry set up by Angel Locsin for the death of an elderly man who lined up for hours to get free food items.
“Death by community pantry,” he tweeted Friday (April 23), adding, “I told you so!.”
Herbosa has since apologized for the remark, saying it was “ill-judged.”
UP said that while Concepcion expressed regret over Herbosa’s resignation, he also stressed that it was “imperative that there be consistency and harmony in our relationship as administrators, as well as in our public pronouncements, given that we both represent the larger University community, its spirit and its interests.”
Herbosa served as executive vice president of UP since 2017.
