Bet maging batas! Bill proposing free medical checkups for all Pinoys set for plenary debates

By Billy Begas

The House Committees on Health and on Appropriations have endorsed for plenary approval a measure providing free annual medical check-up in any government hospital and institutions to all Filipinos.

Anakalusugan Rep. Michael Defensor, principal author of the proposed Free Annual Medical Check-up Act (House Bill 9072) said the medical check-up will include blood sugar and cholesterol tests.

He said the free laboratory and diagnostic tests can be expanded depending on the availability of funds of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth).

According to the Department of Health, the leading causes of death among Filipinos are heart diseases, diseases of the vascular system, pneumonia, and malignant neoplasms/cancers.
