Criticism of gov’t pandemic response just ‘politicking’ – Andanar

By Prince Golez

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar on Thursday expressed dismay over comments describing the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic as lacking in leadership.

Issuing statements as such disregards the hard work and sacrifice of the medical frontliners and government officials during this time and is an “unnecessary form” of politicking and electioneering, according to Andanar.

The PCOO chief said the presence of more contagious and different Covid-19 variants is behind the current surge of infections, which other countries experience, too.

“To say that the Duterte administration’s response is on ‘autopilot’ is to belittle the expertise of those in the recommendatory and implementary bodies who have put in hard work and dedication to address the health issue since day one,” the secretary said.

“These are people, experts on their field, who base their decision on data and information. Those critics skewed use of words such as ‘ningas cogon’ and ‘one horrific year’, while all highly quotable, reflect a faulty understanding or bailiwick-driven politics,” he added.

To quell a rising caseload of Covid-19 cases, Andanar said the government is “ceaseless” in intensifying targeted testing and vaccine inoculation and is working “non-stop” at improving health care and facility management.

The Palace official also assured that the Duterte administration remains open and receptive to discussions of “specific and actionable” suggestions to address the pandemic.

“We welcome these, rather than the recycled and counterproductive criticisms that do not benefit anyone else, other than individuals with planned political endeavors,” he concluded.
