Deputy Speaker and Cavite Rep. Strike Revilla has filed a measure to create a commission that will regulate electronic sports (Esports).
In House Bill 8801, Revilla said the Esports has become increasingly popular not only to play for entertainment but for competition as well.
“This developing industry has drawn a revenue of US$24 million in the first half of the year for mobile Esports in the Philippines,” he said.
In 2019 Southeast Asian Games, Filipino players won five medals in the Esports competition.
The measure will establish the Philippine Esports Commission as the governing body to organize, oversee and monitor Esports in the country.
The Commission shall be administered by a Board of Trustees composed of the secretary of Department of Education (DepEd) as chairperson, secretary of Department of Tourism (DOT) as vice-chairperson, secretary of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), chairpersons of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), and Philippine Esports Commission, and two representatives from the private sector.
Revilla said the commission will legitimize Esports, assist student players and establish infrastructure for the culture and industry of Esports.
