Palace explains absence of Kagitingan rites

By Prince Golez

“We are under community quarantine.”

Palace Spokesman Harry Roque made the statement after critics of President Rodrigo Duterte questioned the absence of a public event to commemorate Araw ng Kagitingan.

In a brief statement, Roque said mass gatherings are prohibited in areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

Metro Manila and the provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal are under ECQ since March 29 due to the rising cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“Lest they forget, we are under community quarantine, where gatherings are not encouraged,” according to the secretary.

“Active cases of Covid-19 remain high and we have to ensure not only the safety of the President but also the physical well-being of the staff and the security in charge of the coordination and preparation of the presidential engagement or event,” he added.
