Contrary to claims made by some groups, President Rodrigo Duterte continues to enjoy the support of the “super majority” of the uniformed services, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Tuesday.
Lacson said this is even with complaints by some middle- and high-ranking officers in the military that they are being “restrained” from protecting our territories.
“The President remains very popular and he enjoys massive support from the super majority of the men in uniform, both active and retired,” Lacson, who chairs the Senate defense committee, said in an interview on CNN Philippines.
He also said he does not believe claims that some retired officers are withdrawing support for Duterte.
Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana and Armed Forces chief of staff Cirilito Sobejana had already tagged as fake news the rumors of such withdrawal of support, he noted.
Lacson added the complaints from middle-grade and ranking officers of the military that they are being “restrained” from protecting our territories does not mean a withdrawal of support.
“I don’t think it will come to that. There are rumblings and complaints but it will not escalate into a situation that the AFP will withdraw support for the President. I would say that with certainty. I am chairman of the defense and security committee of the Senate. I’ve been in touch with most of the high ranking military officers. And I will tell you he really enjoys support from them,” he said.
