Great Wall Motors is yet another Chinese brand that’s looking to go global, and in order to do that, they’re looking to its lightweight platform to help them gain a technological edge. However, before they do so, they should reconsider its rather unfortunate name: the LEMON platform.
Except for its unfriendly marketing name, the LEMON platform is Great Wall Motor’s weapon to global domination thanks to its flexibility, performance, and safety.
The platform is ultra-rigid, but lightweight thanks to the use of “submarine-class” high-strength steel on 70 percent of its body.
According to Great Wall, the LEMON platform also enables them to reduce body roll by 50 percent, while boosting steering accuracy by 16 percent. The lateral stiffness is also up by 15 percent, while lowering the center of gravity by 30 mm compared to its pre-LEMON platform. They’ve also managed to cut “unwanted fat,” cutting around 100 kilograms, thereby boosting its fuel economy by as much as 14 percent.
The modularity of the platform also enables Great Wall to develop different vehicles—SUVs, sedans, MPVs—from the A- to the D-segment using the LEMON platform. It also gives their vehicles access to advanced driving aids.
Great Wall Motors says they will roll out its global models such as the third-generation Haval H6 and Jolion at the same pace as the Chinese domestic market. This move, according to the carmaker, is important in boosting its brand image on the global stage. The Jolion is pegged as their “global urban leading SUV,” while the Haval H6 is there “new-generation model of global technology.”
The Haval H6 and the Jolion will join the global market in the second quarter of 2021. Great Wall Motors has expressed interest in returning to the Philippine market, but so far, they’ve remained silent ever since the COVID-19 pandemic struck last year.
