Exploiting hunger: Bayan Muna rep slams ‘surrender’ of activists for cash aid

By Billy Begas

Bayan Muna Rep. Ferdinand Gaite said the government is using hunger to force people to surrender their rights to organize.

Gaite made the statement following reports that some members of Bayan Muna and Kadamay surrendered in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan in exchange for cash aid.

“Ayuda kapalit ng pagsuko sa karapatan? Why do people have to trade in the right to organize themselves in exchange for aid? This is undemocratic and immoral. It is sick. They are exploiting people’s hunger amidst the pandemic to advance their sinister anti-democratic political agenda,” Gaite said.

While some government officials attacked community pantries for supposedly highlighting political issues, Gaite said the government is forcing people to surrender their constitutionally protected rights to receive help from the local government units.

“Ito ang bersyon ng bayanihan ng NTF-ELCAC, ‘buy-anihan,’ ibebenta mo sa kanila ang karapatan mo kapalit ng ayuda,” Gaite added.

Gaite insisted that there is no reason to make members of legitimate people’s organization like Bayan Muna and Kadamay “surrender”.

“Hindi kailangang “magbalik-loob sa pamahalaan” ng mga residenteng ito dahil hindi naman sila mga rebelde. Hindi nila kailangang sumuko dahil hindi sila mga kriminal,” he said.

The solon believes that the fake surrender is only being used to “make easy money by milking the rebel returnee funds” under Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP).
