Palace Spokesman Harry Roque told Senator Kiko Pangilinan to read the 2016 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA).
Roque made the statement after Pangilinan asked if Roque was getting his salary from China following his assertion that the Philippines was never in possession of Julian Felipe Reef in the West Philippine Sea.
“I suggest that Sen. Pangilinan reads the PCA ruling,” said Roque.
“Hindi po ako ang nagsabi na hindi kabahagi ang Julian Felipe sa EEZ (exclusive economic zone). Ang Hague Tribunal po ang nagsabi nun. Basa basa minsan,” he added.
Despite Roque’s remarks, the Department of National Defense and the Department of Foreign Affairs maintained that the reef, located approximately 175 nautical miles west of Bataraza, Palawan, is within the Philippines’ EEZ.
Both agencies have also called on China to immediately withdraw all its vessels in the area and vicinity of Julian Felipe Reef.
