The alumni of San Beda College (SBC) are calling on President Rodrigo Duterte to retract his statements on the West Philippine Sea, including his recent remark that China is in possession of it.
In a statement, the alumni said Duterte, as President, is “solemnly bound to uphold, defend and protect his countrymen and the integrity of our national territory.”
“We the undersigned BEDAN aalumni, hereby respectfully urge and call his Excellency, President Rodrigo R. Duterte to RETRACT his public statement that China is in possession of the West Philippine Sea,” the statement read.
The SBC alumni said Duterte should also retract his remark that the arbitral award won by the Philippines in 2016 is a “mere scrap of paper” that “should be thrown in the waste basket.”
Graduates of SBC also urged Duterte to “categorically, demonstrably and publicly uphold the mandate of our Philippine Constitution that ‘the state shall protect the nation’s marine wealth in its archipelagic waters, territorial sea, and exclusive economic zone, and reserve its use and employment exclusively to Filipino citizens.”
A total of 125 alumni signed the statement. Duterte graduated from the San Beda College of Law in 1972.
