ABS-CBN remains sorely missed on free television a year after it was forced to shut down because its franchise expired.
The hashtag, #IbalikangABSCBN trended on Twitter Wednesday (May 5) as netizens clamor for the network’s return to free TV. It was the top trending topic as of 11 a.m, with close to 11,000 tweets.
“The last screen before it went black. We will never forget. #IbalikAngABSCBN,” tweeted @dumidyeypee with a screenshot of ABS-CBN’s sign off message.
“ABS-CBN is not perfect company pero I think sila pa rin ang best pagdating sa content despite the franchise denial. Ganunpaman, #IbalikAngABSCBN and #NeverForget ang 70 congs who denied the franchise. Wag din kalimutan ang Duterte and animals na reason for everything,” shared @pripri_gosakto.
“The mind will not always remember exactly what happened but the heart will always remember the feeling. #IbalikAngABSCBN,” tweeted @JoOcampo7.
“It’s almost 1 year since Abs-Cbn force to be shutdown. Ang bilis ng Panahon Just wait until 2022 Abs-Cbn will rise again. We will rise again kapamilya #IbalikAngABSCBN Never forget,” @itsmealana02 said.
“It’s been a year since our happy and colorful television just turned all sad and black. It still hurts ‘till this day. #IbalikAngABSCBN,” tweeted @binjinerismm.
ABS-CBN went off air on May 5, 2020 in compliance with an order from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) since its franchise expired. The Lopez-owned network applied for a new franchise but it was rejected by the House of Representatives legislative franchises committee after marathon hearings.
President Rodrigo Duterte had threatened to shut ABS-CBN down even before its franchise expired. Some of the network’s programs can be accessed through the ZOE TV channel (renamed A2Z channel) and TV5.
