An additional 485,000 doses of the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine will be delivered to the Philippines this month, National Task Force (NTF) Against Covid-19 chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. said.
The country received on Saturday the initial batch of 15,000 doses, which will be used for a dry run in preparation for the arrival of the bulk shipments.
Galvez said the government has secured a total of 10 million doses of Galameya’s shot to be delivered in tranches within a four-month period.
“Despite the shortage in global supply and the great demand for anti-Covid-19 vaccines, the Russian government is committed to deliver vaccines for our country and help contain the ongoing surge in the national capital region,” the vaccine czar also said.
According to him, the Philippines is expecting the delivery of bigger volumes from Russian Direct Investment Fund, which backed the development of Sputnik V, with the arrival of two million doses this May and succeeding shipments of four to six million doses in the coming months.
The first batch of Sputnik V vaccines will be deployed in the National Capital Region – the epicenter of Covid-19 in the country – Cebu and Davao due to the sensitive temperature requirement and the availability of logistics facilities which can handle the delicate storage needs of the vaccine, said Galvez.
“Through this trial phase for Sputnik V, we will not only be able to improve the logistics component of our vaccine program, but also prepare the implementing units in receiving and administering this type of vaccine,” he added.
Russian’s Covid-19 vaccine is the second government-procured vaccine that was delivered to Manila following China’s CoronaVac vaccine.
