Pacquiao boycott? Duterte orders Cusi to push through with PDP-Laban meeting

It was President Duterte’s decision all along.

The President has ordered Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi to hold a meeting of the PDP-Laban party to discuss issues affecting the group.

The President’s hand in the party assembly on May 31 was revealed by the Palace amid the growing rift among party leaders over the holding of the meeting.

Senator Manny Pacquiao recently told party members to ignore Cusi’s call for an assembly of the PDP-Laban party. The party leaders are reportedly feuding over the candidates who will be fielded in the 2022 elections.

Duterte is chairman of the ruling party while Cusi serves as vice chairman. Pacquiao is party president.

“Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as Vice Chairman of the ruling party PDP-Laban was directed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, who serves as Chairman, to organize, convene and preside over the council meeting,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque announced on Sunday, May 30.

Roque said the upcoming national assembly is part of the democratic consultation process of the party.

“This move, which is part of the democratic exercise, aims to consult party members and have fruitful and productive exchanges on issues affecting PDP-Laban,” he said.

Cusi earlier called for a national council assembly of PDP-Laban on Tuesday supposedly to assess the party’s support for Duterte’s programs. He said the meeting is an important political process that “we must encourage as it pertains to one of the basic tenets of PDP Laban- consultative and participatory democracy.”

Pacquiao later issued a memorandum discouraging members from attending the meeting called by Cusi. He said the invitation letter was not sanctioned by concerned council officials and violated rules of the party.

“This is not the time for politics. Instead, let us help our country ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic,” the memorandum read.
