A PDP-Laban executive allied with Senator Manny Pacquiao refuses to confirm President Rodrigo Duterte’s involvement in a party meeting called by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi even if signs point to a split within their ranks.
PDP-Laban executive director Ron Munsayac said the national council assembly set by Cusi for May 31 in Cebu doesn’t have the blessing of Pacquiao, the party’s acting president, or Duterte, its chairman.
He said there’s no indication Duterte has a hand in the meeting even if Cusi, the party’s vice chairman, is part of the Cabinet.
“Ang hirap naman po maging assuming na just because Cabinet member, vice chairman eh si chairman na po ang nagpatawag,” Munsayac said on One News’ “The Chiefs” Friday (May 28).
He said that based on PDP-Laban’s bylaws, only Duterte and Pacquiao can call for a national assembly.
“Assuming lang, assuming na patawag talaga ito ni chairman, he has to work with the president. If party president Pacquiao wants to call [for] a meeting, he has to work with the chairman,” Munsayac said.
PDP-Laban members are expected to discuss matters related to the 2022 elections in the Cebu meeting, which will push through despite Pacquiao’s advice to politikos to ignore Cusi’s invitation.
Cusi’s faction has been pushing for Duterte to run for vice president in the upcoming elections. Pacquiao, meanwhile, is widely believed to be running for president.
