Robredo out! Trillanes volunteers as 1Sambayan’s presidential bet

With Vice President Leni Robredo allegedly set on running for governor of Camarines Sur, former senator Antonio Trillanes IV is presenting himself as the possible standard bearer of the opposition-backed 1Sambayan coalition.

“In view of VP Leni’s preparations to run for Governor of Camarines Sur in 2022, I, together with the Magdalo group, have decided to convey to the 1SAMBAYAN Coalition to change my status from being an alternate candidate (to VP Leni) to being a principal candidate for President to vie for the Coalition’s nomination. This move is necessary for my name to be included in 1SAMBAYAN’s selection process,” Trillanes said in a May 12 Facebook post.

The former senator clarified that his move isn’t aimed at dividing the opposition because 1Sambayan will only field one candidate for president and vice president.

“Just to further stress this point, in the event that VP Leni DEFINITIVELY decides to run for President BEFORE 1SAMBAYAN picks its nominees in July, I would wholeheartedly STEP ASIDE and WITHDRAW my own candidacy in her favor,” he said.

However, until Robredo decides to run for president, Trillanes said he will assume that the Vice President will seek a local post so the opposition can start preparing for the 2022 elections.

1Sambayan, which was launched in March, counts among its members the Magdalo party-list and the progressive Makabayan bloc. Among its convenors are retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, former ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, and ex-foreign secretary Albert del Rosario.

Pulse Asia’s survey from February 22 to March 3, 2021 showed Robredo in sixth place among the potential presidential candidates. Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is favored to win the elections based on voter preference, followed by former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
