Travel ban to keep out COVID variant found in India may be extended: Roque

By Prince Golez

The Philippine travel ban to stop the entry of “double mutant” coronavirus (Covid-19) variant first detected in India may be extended, Malacañang said Monday.

The government earlier barred the entry of travelers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka until May 14 in a bid to prevent the spread of this variant.

“Ang tingin ko, kahit anong classification ang irekomenda ng IATF, hindi pa po tayo magbubukas ng ating borders. Bawal pa rin po ang turismo at tanging ilang mga dayuhan lamang na meron pong mga investors’ visa ang papayagang pumasok,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser.

“So, hindi magbabago yan. Our borders will remain closed lalong-lalo na sa mga bansa gaya ng India (at) Pakistan na kailan lang po nag-impose ng absolutely no entry policy,” he also said.

Earlier, Roque announced that the government’s Covid-19 task force has required a 14-day quarantine to all inbound travelers to the Philippines.

The first ten days of which must be spent in a quarantine facility, with the remainder to be completed under home quarantine in their respective local government units of destination.

“All arriving travelers shall likewise undergo a RT-PCR testing on the 7th day; and notwithstanding a negative test result, they shall complete the 10-day facility-based quarantine period, under the strict symptom monitoring of the Bureau of Quarantine,” he added.
