Push pa more! Duterte VP run not unlawful, says Panelo

The law does not prohibit President Rodrigo Duterte from running for vice president in the 2022 national elections, his chief legal counsel said.

It is only illegal for Duterte to run again as president next year, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said during his commentary show “Counterpoint.”

“Tignan niyo ‘yung Saligang Batas, ‘di ba klarung-klaro naman doon na ang hindi pupuwede yung presidente, incumbent, yung nakaupo, hindi ka na pwedeng tumakbo bilang presidente,” according to him.

Panelo was reacting to the statement of lawyer and 1Sambayan convenor Howard Calleja that the alleged vice presidential run of Duterte is against the law as it would be impossible for a president to assume a “successor post.”

Duterte earlier said that running for vice president was a “good idea” because he still has unfinished business.

He, however, said he would endorse Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez if he would run for the second highest elective post.
