Duterte a press freedom predator? That’s ‘bereft of merit’, says Palace

The inclusion of President Rodrigo Duterte in the 2021 “press freedom predators” list by international media watchdog Reporters Without Borders was “absolutely bereft of merit,” Malacañang said Tuesday.

Press freedom is alive and well in the Philippines, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said, noting that most sources of the International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor on her findings on the Philippines’ controversial war on drugs were media reports.

“Kung titignan niyo yung findings ng ICC prosecutor, lahat ng quinuote niya eh media na kritikal sa gobyerno,” according to him.

“Wala pong ni isang kasong libelo na isinampa ang presidente. Wala po kahit sinong mamamahayag na napakulong ng presidente,” he added.

Roque said it was the decision of Congress to reject the application of broadcast firm ABS-CBN for a franchise, which led to its shutdown.

The spokesperson also denied Duterte had a hand in the ruling of the Securities and Exchange Commission to revoke news website Rappler’s business registration for alleged violation of foreign equity restrictions in mass media.
