Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo is taking credit for the nationwide movement to make Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte the country’s next president.
In a July 9 interview on Politiko Live’s “Balitaan at Kumustahan,” Panelo said he started to push for Sara’s presidency back in 2019.
“Ako rin ang naglunsad Jon, noong Sara for president movement. Nilunsad ko yan two years ago sa Hong Kong. Sabi ko si Sara ang dapat sumunod sa presidente for many reasons,” he said.
Panelo, a close friend of President Rodrigo Duterte, also claimed credit for the Duterte-Duterte tandem for the presidency and vice presidency.
“Three months ago nilunsad ko naman ‘yung Duterte-Duterte. Kako dapat itong mag-amang ito, di ba?” he recalled.
Panelo said his idea of a father and daughter tandem for the top two highest elective posts in the land has since gained ground after initially being dismissed even by Duterte’s supporters.
“Nag-caught fire ‘yan. ‘Yung Duterte-Duterte, suddenly ‘yung iba parang sila ang nagla-launch eh matagal ko na sinabi dapat siya (President Duterte) mag-vice president, hindi pupwedeng hindi,” Panelo said.
Duterte recently said he “maybe” running for vice president in the 2022 elections due to the clamor of his party mates from PDP-Laban.
Sara also confirmed during a visit to Cebu on July 9 that she’s open to running for the presidency.
