Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque has insisted that all Filipino fishermen can freely fish in the Scarborough Shoal.
Roque made the statement after hundreds of Filipino fisherfolk belonging to the Bigkis ng Mangingisda group said they were still prevented from fishing at Scarborough Shoal and its surrounding areas.
The fishermen who claimed they were blocked from the fishing ground by the Chinese were not telling the truth, the Palace official said during a televised briefing Monday.
“I dispute that. Ako lang naman ang tumayong abogado ng mga mangingisda galing sa Masinloc, galing sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng Pangasinan. I have personal knowledge na halos lahat po sila ay nakabalik na sa kanilang hanapbuhay lalung-lalo na diyan sa Scarborough. Whoever said it must not be reporting the truth and everything but the truth,” said Roque.
“I continuously communicate with my former clients, I communicate with the local government units, particularly of Masinloc. I just recently met with the mayor (of a coastal town of Pangasinan) two weeks ago precisely to inquire on the welfare of the fishermen pursuing their livelihoods on Scarborough and there are no reports that they are not able to pursue their livelihoods,” he added.
