Celebrities and veteran politikos comprise the Nationalist People’s Coalition’s (NPC) shortlist of potential senatorial candidates in the 2022 elections, Politiko has learned.
A source told Politiko that the following personalities—whose names are familiar to the public—are being considered for inclusion in NPC’s senatorial slate.
1. Senator Manny Pacquiao
2. Senator Sherwin Gatchalian
3. Senator Joel Villanueva
4. Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri
5. Information and Communications Technology Secretary Gringo Honasan
6. Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos Recto
7. Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres Gomez
8. Antique Rep. Loren Legarda
9. Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero
10. Former senator JV Ejercito
11. Former senator Bam Aquino or Kris Aquino
12. Former Commission on Elections commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal
Pacquiao is widely believed to be running for president. However, Politiko’s source said internal squabbles in the senator’s party, PDP-Laban, could make him reconsider his political plans.
NPC has yet to talk to Santos Recto and Kris Aquino about a possible senatorial bid, but Politiko’s source said they will be included in the lineup should they decide to run.
Zubiri and Villanueva will likely be included in NPC’s slate as guest candidates, while party officials are still convincing Larrazabal to run.
Former senator Bam Aquino is reportedly bent on staging a Senate comeback despite losing in the 2019 elections.
