May anomalya? Ombudsman to probe free wifi project between DICT, UN body

The Free Wi-Fi for All project of the Department of Information and Communication (DICT) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been placed under the scrutiny of the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB), Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra said.

Guevarra said this is just one of the cases that has been endorsed by the DOJ-led Task Force Against Corruption (TFAC) before the OMB.

The secretary assured that “as of June 2021, the OMB has acted upon and is currently evaluating the numerous complaints endorsed/filed by the TFAC.”

He added that most of these cases “had something to do with their intervention in public works projects in their respective jurisdiction.”

The UNDP had stated that the project as “aims to connect 6,000 sites in remote, vulnerable, and off-grid communities in the country by December 2022.”

“The project represents five percent of the DICT’s Free Wi-Fi for All National Program total target of 120,000 sites,” the UNDP had cited.
