Mon Tulfo calls Duterte’s attacks vs Pacquiao ‘ill advised’: Baka maging martyr si Manny!

President Rodrigo Duterte might end up making Senator Manny Pacquiao a martyr in the public’s eye because of his attacks against the eight-division world boxing champ, Special Envoy to China Mon Tulfo has warned.

Tulfo called Duterte’s tirades against Pacquiao “ill advised” because it has turned the senator into an underdog that voters could root for in the 2022 elections.

Duterte has slammed Pacquiao for saying corruption under his administration has gotten “three times worse.” The President also said the senator still has a lot to learn before aspiring for the presidency.

“In the eyes of the masses – the bulk of people who voted for Digong in the 2016 elections – Pacman may become a martyr,” Tulfo said in his July 8 column for the Philippine Star.

“The Filipino masses, many of whom are emotional and unthinking, root for the underdog. We’ve seen that in previous elections, when actors who portrayed underdogs in the movies were elected to high office,” he added.

Tulfo blamed Duterte’s political advisers, presidential spokesman Harry Roque and presidential legal counsel Sal Panelo for failing to advise the President against attacking Pacquiao.

He said Duterte might have decided against criticizing Pacquiao had he been advised by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, whom Tulfo described as “level-headed and sensible.”
