Palace defends Duterte’s joke to cap Taal’s crater: ‘He was trying to lighten the mood’

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte was just “trying to lighten the mood” when he joked about placing a cap on Taal Volcano following its eruption last week, Malacañang said Monday.

“The president, of course, was trying to lighten the mood dahil ano ba naman yan, may pandemiya (ng Covid) na nga may pagputok pa ng bulkang Taal,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a virtual presser.

During the inauguration of the Light Rail Transit-Line 2 East Extension Project last Thursday, Duterte said in jest that he would put a cap on Taal’s crater after it was placed under Alert Level 3.

On criticisms that the President’s comment lacked empathy, Roque said: “That’s the president’s style.”

“Kung talagang mag-iisip kayo ng masama, sa mulat mula, ganyan na po kayo mag-isip. Ipagpatuloy niyo na. Anyway, matatapos naman ang termino ng presidente,” he added.
