Roque insists cash gifts, rewards for Hidilyn Diaz not tax-free

By Prince Golez

The monetary donations and rewards given to weightlifter and Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz will be taxed unless the donor’s tax has already been paid, according to Malacañang.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made the comment after Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said that the former made an “erroneous” claim that a law is needed to exempt Diaz’s winnings from income tax.

Drilon said Republic Act No. 10699 or the “National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act” already exempted all prizes and awards granted to athletes from the payment of income tax.

Roque, however, insisted that “there is still the donor’s tax, which must be shouldered/paid by generous individuals or entities.”

He noted that under RA 10963 or the TRAIN law, donors must pay the required donor’s tax of 6 percent, in excess of P250,000.

Diaz is set to receive P10 million from the government for winning the weightlifting women’s 55kg category in the Tokyo Olympics last Monday.

She will also receive millions worth of gifts and incentives from the private sector.

President Rodrigo Duterte likewise pledged to give her P3 million and a fully furnished house and lot in Zamboanga City.
