Roque to Carpio: Go ahead, impeach him if you can

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday challenged retired Senior Justice Antonio Carpio to file an impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte for allowing China to fish within the Philippine exclusive economic zone.

Carpio earlier said Duterte should be impeached for allowing Chinese nationals to catch fish in the West Philippine Sea as this violates the Constitution.

“Go ahead, impeach him if you can,” Roque dared Carpio during a televised Palace briefing.

“Yung pangingisda sa Boro, hindi presidente ang nag-decide diyan. Ang nag-decide po diyan eh yung Arbitral Tribunal,” he explained.

According to him, the 2016 international arbitral tribunal ruling recognizes the “traditional fishing rights,” not only of Filipino fishermen, but also from other nations, to exploit fisheries resources in the sea region.

“Hindi lang Pilipino ang nangingisda diyan, pati mga Tsino, mga Vietnamese, yung mga merong traditional fishing rights,” said Roque.

“So, ‘wag niyang sisihin ang presidente. Sisihin niya ang arbitral tribunal kung gusto niya at observer naman siya maski saling-pusa siya doon sa Hague, kahit papano meron din siyang responsibilidad sa ganitong desisyon,” he added.
