Filipinos should not believe President Rodrigo Duterte’s claim that Senate investigations are hollow and used by some senators only for posturing, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Friday.
Lacson said several laws have been crafted precisely because the Senate held committee investigations and hearings in aid of legislation.
“Hindi dapat paniwalaan ng mga Pilipino ang pahayag ng Pangulo na walang nangyayari sa mga imbestigasyon na ginagawa sa Senado. Maraming batas na pinakikinabangan ng taumbayan ang naipasa namin dahil sa mga inquiries at imbestigasyon na isinagawa namin,” he said in a statement.
One recent measure is the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 that Lacson authored. The law stemmed from a Senate probe into the hazing death of University of Santo Tomas student Horacio Castillo III in 2017.
Lacson also urged Duterte to read up on the doctrines of separation of powers and checks and balances of the executive, legislative and judiciary before poking his nose into Senate affairs.
“Mr President, read and memorize: Separation of powers is a doctrine of constitutional law under which the three branches of government (executive, legislative, and judicial) are kept separate. This is also known as the system of checks and balances,” he said in a tweet.

On the other hand, Lacson said Duterte should look in his own backyard, which he said reeks of incompetence and corruption.
“Sa halip, asikasuhin niya ang mga kakulangan ng sangay ng gobyerno na kanyang pinamumunuan na hitik sa incompetence at corruption, hindi lang sa pagtugon sa pandemya kundi sa maraming aspeto ng governance,” he said.
He lamented many high officials who are subject of Senate probes get away because Duterte defended them.
“Hindi trabaho ng Senado ang magsampa ng demanda. Trabaho ng Executive Branch iyon. Judiciary naman ang magpapakulong. Mahirap bang i-memorize yan?” he added.
