Duterte appeals anew for Reds to give up armed struggle, return to the fold

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has renewed his call to communist insurgents to surrender and give up their weapons as he rejected their useless ideology.

During a televised briefing Monday, Duterte assured members of the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, New People’s Army a better life in the mainstream.

“Drop the guns. I’ll give you the house and I’ll give you the money to start. Sige lang kayo away diyan. Para lang kayong mga sundalo na nawala na sa panahon. What purpose are you trying to show to the world? That you are capable of killing people? That’s what you are showing to us and to the world,” the Chief Executive said.

“Wala naman kayong nakuha ni isang barangay. You have not been successful in all your ideological confrontations. Ang naiwan sa inyo magpatay ng tao lang. You know, it’s a two-way affair. Magpatay kayo pero papatayin rin kayo talaga ng sundalo ko.

“Drop the armed struggle, wala talagang mangyari, sabi ko sa inyo. Wala na ‘yung mga lider ninyo, puro matatanda na. Their brains are no longer not as good as noon siguro. Ngayon, wala eh it’s gone, period,” he added.

Under the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program, each rebel returnee receive an immediate assistance of P15,000; P21,000 to defray the subsistence or meal cost; support to relocate and secure their family; and P50,000 livelihood assistance.

They also receive medical and legal assistance, housing, modified conditional cash transfer, loan and market access, alternative learning system, and psychosocial assistance among others.
