Health Secretary Francisco Duque III claimed Friday (August 27) that he’s ready to resign from his post—but he’s waiting for the time to do so.

At the continuation of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee’s hearing on the Department of Health’s spending of its 2020 budget, Duque said he wants to clear his name after the Commission on Audit (COA) made several adverse findings related to the DOH in its annual audit report.

“I have been attending all these hearings both in the House and the Senate with one goal in mind: That is for me and for the DOH to clear all of these COA (Commission on Audit) observations and findings and deficiencies,” he said.
“We want to clear everything. So if the time comes when I will need to resign, I will. It’s no problem with me. What is important is we clear all of these findings of purported deficiencies and we will address them squarely,” Duque added.

The Health Secretary is in the hot seat over the Commission on Audit’s report that the DOH had “deficiencies” in spending over P67 billion in 2020 for COVID-19 response.

Duque’s statement followed Senator Bong Go’s advice for him to make the “supreme sacrifice” amid the controversies faced by the DOH.

“My word of advice is to make the supreme sacrifice when the right time comes. For now…clear yourself and the DOH and address COA’s findings,” Go said.
