Gov’t urged to boost testing capacity to 140,000 a day amid Delta variant scare

Increasing the testing output is the key to detecting not only the Delta variant of COVID-19 but also the other variants of concern that could be present in the country, according to an official of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan).

Bayan Secretary General Renato Reyes said the government’s testing capacity should not only be doubled but tripled since COVID-19 cases continue to rise.

“Nung binabalikan namin yung mga datos nag-stagnate na po yung testing natin eh. Hindi na po malaki ang umigpaw, nandun lang tayo as 50,000 tests per day,” he said in an interview on Abante’s Balitaan at Kumustahan on Tuesday.

“Pero ang kinakailangan natin dahil sa napakataas na na positivity rate sa mga lungsod, ang kailangan natin we should testing already around 140,000 per day,” he added.

Reyes explained that this is far from the number of people who are actually being tested per day and that this must be reached if the government wants to detect, contain, and isolate those who have already been infected.
