Senator Panfilo Lacson proposed uniting the opposition by having presidential bets withdraw their candidacies in favor of the strongest contender after October, Vice President Leni Robredo revealed Sunday (August 8).
Robredo confirmed on her radio show, “Biserbisyong Leni,” that she rejected what Lacson described as a “sure unification effort” for the opposition for the 2022 polls.
She said Lacson wanted to use pre-election voter preference surveys as basis in determining the most viable presidential candidate for the opposition.
“Ang proposal, kami mag-uusap-usap, mag-file kami lahat ng certificate of candidacy, tapos mag-agree kami ng certain na titingnan namin kung sino pinakamalakas sa survey, tapos all the rest magwi-withdraw. Susuportahan namin best contenders based on numbers,” Robredo said.
The Vice President, however, said she rejected Lacson’s proposal because she didn’t want to lead her supporters on in case she decides to run for the presidency.
“Kailangan tuloy ang laban. Kapag nag-file ako, kailangan ko ituloy ang laban. ‘Di ko kailangan umatras kasi pinresenta ko na sa publiko e. ‘Yun ang reason kung bakit ‘di ako agreeable sa proposal,” she said.
Lacson said in an August 5 interview on ANC that Robredo “resisted” his proposal to unite the opposition but did not disclose details about his plan.
The senator, who will be running for president alongside Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III, said his proposal was a “sure formula” for fielding a common candidate but Robredo was not sold to the idea.
Robredo has yet to announce her political plans for 2022 despite clamor for her to run for president.
