A local legislator in Argentina was in stable condition Friday after being shot in the stomach while campaigning, doctors said.
Miguel Arias, who represents the Frente de Todos coalition of President Alberto Fernandez, was shot during a rally on Thursday night in northeastern Corrientes province, which is holding regional elections on Sunday.
“Political violence is inadmissible under the rule of law. The provincial government must quickly shed light on the act and punish those responsible,” Fernandez said on Twitter on Friday.
Local authorities have not identified the person responsible for the attack on Arias, who was campaigning among around 100 people in the village of Tapebicua, 50 kilometers from the border with Brazil.
Corrientes is governed by a center-right alliance aligned with Fernandez’s predecessor Mauricio Macri.
Arias, a veterinarian and father of five children, was shot in the abdomen with a .22 caliber handgun.
He was taken to a hospital and underwent a two-hour operation.
The hospital said on Friday that he was in stable condition.
Corrientes governor Gustavo Valdes hit out on Twitter at the attacker.
“Violence is never an option in a democratic society,” he said
