Malacañang expressed concern over the increasing hate crimes against Filipinos in the United States (US).
In a virtual presser Thursday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said he’s saddened by the surge in attacks on Asian Americans and called for these to stop.
“Nakakalungkot po yan at nakakaabala. Unang-una, halos lahat tayo merong kamag-anak sa Amerika at ayaw nating maging biktima ang ating mga kababayan,” according to Roque.
“Mas nakakaabala yan kasi yung mga kababayan natin, mga kamag-anak natin, nagpunta sa Amerika kasi alam natin, what drives Amerika is the hopes and aspirations ng mga immigrants.
“So parang pag pinagiinitan mo yung mga immigrants, eh pinagiinitan mo yung kaluluwa ng Amerika mismo as the land of immigrants. Sana po matigil na ito,” he added.
The secretary was reacting to a Stop Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Hate report that Filipinos are third among anti-Asian hate victims (91. percent) in the US.
Chinese individuals reported the most hate incidents (43.5 percent), followed by Koreans (16.8 percent), Japanese (8.6 percent), and Vietnamese (8.2 percent), according to Stop AAPI Hate.
