Beware of requests: Public warned vs fake email using IACAT exec’s name

Another fake email claiming to be from a government official has begun going around.

The Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) made this known in its Aug. 18 public advisory that warned the public against receiving the email executivedirector1028@gmail.com that is “pretending to be IACAT’s Executive Director Jinky P. Dedumo.”

“The said email address requests for assistance in the alleged procurement of eBay gift cards,” the council said in its advisory.

“In a similar instance, a certain email address namely, osecmig1@gmail.com, is also being utilized by an unknown subject representing himself as Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra requesting assistance for a procurement of iTunes gift cards as donations to patients at hospice care units across the Philippines, subject to reimbursement,” it cited.

The IACAT said Dedumo only uses the email accounts jpdedumo.iacat@gmail.com and jpdedumo@gmail.com.

“Messages coming from a different email address than that of the official ones, such as the above-reported, shall be dealt with conscientiously, as these neither originate from IACAT, the Department of Justice, nor the Executive Director,” the council declared.

With this, the IACAT told those who will receive such emails to “close the message immediately and report it as spam.”

“However, some spam may occasionally get through to your inbox or be diverted to your Spam Folder, so please be cautious,” it advised.

.

The IACAT said the emails is part of phishing which is “a fraudulent process used by spammers to acquire sensitive information from users such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details.”

“Email recipients are often deceived by phishing attempts since messages appear to be sent by legitimate and trustworthy sources,” the IACAT said.
