Not trying harder? Duterte reiterates difficulty in gov’t fight vs. corruption

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte once again admitted that eliminating “endemic” corruption in government is hard.

Duterte, however, said his administration is trying its best to govern better and reduce opportunities for corruption.

“I’m sorry but I said people are really skeptic and cynic about our desire to improve government service. We do not claim to maybe really totally, totally clean government at this time, not even with another president or endemic ang ano ang corruption,” the President said during his Talk to the People late Friday.

“But from time to time, ito. So I am given the opportunity to show to the people again that we are not bragging about it but we are trying our best to cope with the situation regarding graft and corruption in our government,” he added.

Prior to this, Duterte announced the dismissal of National Electrification Administration Administrator Edgardo Masongsong for alleged corruption.

“We’ve been talking about corruption. Alam mo, may bago akong… The name is Edgardo Masongsong. He is the administrator of the National Electrification Administration. I dismissed him from public service,” he said.

According to him, the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission conducted the investigation and made the recommendation for Masongsong to be dismissed from the service.
