Pacquiao still People’s Champ despite loss: Palace

By Prince Golez

Despite loss to Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas, Malacañang said Senator and boxer Manny Pacquiao is still the champion for all Filipinos.

Ugas defeated Pacquiao via unanimous decision (115-113, 116-112 x 2) in Las Vegas on Saturday night to keep his WBA welterweight title belt.

“Public support to Senator Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Pacquiao’s boxing career has always been unwavering, including his latest fight with Yordenis Ugas,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press statement Sunday.

“The boxing icon’s loss in Las Vegas would not diminish the honors he bestowed to our country and the joy he gave to our people. Senator Pacquiao will forever be etched in the hearts of Filipinos as our People’s Champ,” added Roque.

Pacquiao was originally scheduled to fight Errol Spence Jr., who was forced out with an eye injury.
