With a rudderless leadership, the country is unfortunately facing the “perfect storm” in terms of coronavirus pandemic.
Health reform advocate Dr. Tony Leachon issued the warning after expressing disappointment with the “failed leadership” over the pandemic response.
The former government adviser warned that the country’s health situation would unlikely improve if certain steps such as rapid testing, tracing and vaccination are not implemented soon.
After the country’s daily COVID-19 caseload hit record high Sunday, Leachon said country’s testing rate has stayed low, vaccination drive is sluggish, while the stay-at-home rule has been eased.
“I don’t think our situation will improve with MECQ since people will be moving and the playbook measures not in place – plus w worst DOH leader on board!” he tweeted on August 30, 2021.
According to Leachon, the country needed leaders “with focus , commitment, and sense of urgency.”
“People should demand accountability. Exhibiting apathy is the worst thing that we will do as people dreaming of a better future,” he tweeted.
He also agreed with OCTA research’s forecast about possible lower COVID-19 case reproduction rate in Metro Manila by September if the lockdown and test-trace-vaccinate efforts will be stepped up.
“That would be a reality if government will do the ff : mass testings , contact tracings , rapid vaccination – and ECQ!” he said.
Leachon also expressed concern over the plight of health workers as the government continued to ignore their appeals on delayed benefits. He said the health frontliners have become “overworked, overburdened and underpaid.”
“The healthcare workers are the heroes to save PH healthcare system from collapsing. But the DOH has ignored their pleas!” he said.
He added that health workers should be honored for their commitment, service and sacrifices.
As of August 30, the country logged the biggest single-day jump in new coronavirus cases, adding 22,366 confirmed infections. The country’s total recorded COVID cases stood at 1,976,202, including 33,330 deaths.

It’s the confluence of all the events leading to the simultaneous rallies by our healthcare workers.

They are overworked , overburdened, and underpaid.

This is a failure of leadership !

We need to slow down the virus ! In acute surge with steep curve , ECQ is the treatment of choice with mass testings , tracings , and rapid vaccinations. It’s a blueprint.
Dancing with the data is a measure to fail. More lives will be lost here. https://t.co/Wy9pDHF33k
